An introduction to the history of Native North Americans from their earliest history to the present day. From New England to the Southwest, various Indian cultures will be examined by region and time period. Early creation beliefs, religious, social, and political practices, peace and conflict, family life, environmental adaptations, frontiers and borderlands, and archaeological and artistic survivals will be covered. Emphasis will be on the period since Europeans arrived in the present-day United States. Particular interest will be given our local Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), and their contacts with French and English colonists. Modern day legal and geographical conflicts will be reviewed. Approval for SUNY General Education requirement for US History pending. This course has been approved for the SUNY General Education requirement for U.S. History.
