This comprehensive and integrated coverage of the field of African American psychology will address both African and American cultural perspectives. The four major themes of the course are: an introduction to and the foundational framework of African American psychology; social systems and structures that include such topics as family, community, educational and work institutions; individual and developmental processes that include a focus on interpersonal and close relationships, cognition, learning and language, religion and spirituality, and lifespan development; adjustments in adaptation, which include a focus on health, illness, disability, psychosocial adaptation and mental health, drug use and abuse, and prosocial and antisocial behavior.
