By the end of this class, students will: Understand the fundamentals of the criminal justice system and define key terms central to the legal and criminal justice processes. Understand how crime is measured, how victims are treated by these systems, the accused offenders (or convicts) experiences in the system Summarize crime trends and describe how various factors are theorized to influence crime rates Differentiate between the core parts of the criminal justice system- the police, courts, and corrections, and describe how these parts overlap or interact. Understand societal responses to crime and how the criminal justice system has evolved over time. Appreciate the challenges/struggles of the criminal justice system/stakeholders of the system and render possible suggestions for advancement. Review real-world scenarios and build on the knowledge and skills acquired from this class to analyze specific problems and offer solutions. Be confident and creatively identify their unique skills, capabilities, and potential roles in the criminal justice system, which may lead to a future career choice.
