Using cinema as our lens, we will discuss how cultures across the globe understand and express queerness. Non-Western narratives of queer lives and experiences reveal the sheer difficulty of defining the term “queer.” Simultaneously, queer experiences across distant cultures often overlap and help build global communities, blurring any markable difference between the queer east and the queer west. Students will be introduced to pioneering texts of queer theory, such as Judith Butler’s ideas of performativity and Keguro Macharia’s litany on queer activism. Our watchlist includes a combination of English- and foreign-language films, including Fire (1996), Big Eden (2000), Blue is the Warmest Color (2013), Shiva Baby (2020), and Joyland (2022). Assignments include short weekly discussion posts and a final paper.
