This course explores how myths and folklore are reimagined in contemporary manga and anime. We’ll examine the traditional inspirations behind beloved titles like Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Fruits Basket, and Noragami, analyzing how these stories blend ancient narratives with modern themes to create interconnected works that celebrate cultural heritage. Through a multimedia approach, we will utilize visual elements in anime, written narratives in manga, and scholarly articles to deepen our understanding of these dynamic storytelling forms. Students will uncover how these adaptations serve as modern myths, drawing on traditional folklore to resonate with today’s audiences while celebrating cultural identity and diversity. By the end of the course, students will gain a fresh perspective on the evolution of storytelling, recognizing how contemporary spins on ancient tales contribute to cultural dispersion and recognition in a globalized world. Join us to discover how these enchanting stories engage and inspire!
