Battlefields and Negotiations: History, Diplomacy, and War. A period of revolutions, imperial conquests, and diplomatic conferences, this course explores the dynamic relationship between warfare and diplomacy during the 19th century. In examining key conflicts, like the Crimean War, Spanish-American War, Wars of German Unification, and various colonial struggles, alongside diplomatic efforts, such as conferences and treaties, this course aims to consider how battlefields and negotiations shaped not only national boundaries and international relations but also ideas of legitimacy and stability. Through primary and secondary source readings, this course will engage with themes of imperialism, nationalism, and evolving diplomatic relations. Students will gain a nuanced understanding of how the conflicts and conferences of this period not only shaped the geopolitical landscape of the 19th century but also the modern world.
