In the past few years, movies like What's Love Got to do with It (2022), Ms. Marvel (2022), Wedding Season (2022), The Big Sick (2017), Monsoon Wedding (2021), and shows like Bridgerton Season 2 (2022), Never Have I Ever (2020) and Indian Matchmaking (2020) have attained widespread recognition. All these films and shows have attracted a huge audience by exoticizing South Asian weddings and culture. We will discuss how, by using elaborate South Asian wedding ceremonies, these films and shows misrepresent South Asian culture, and homogenize it as a monolith. We will interrogate the parents' desire for South Asian spouses for their children, their reliance on indigeneity, and their troubled relationship with the American Dream. The students will learn about stereotyped/racialized identities, misappropriated desi culture, diasporic anxieties of home and exile, migration, assimilation, xenophobia and matrimonial (mis)representations of South Asia in Hollywood and beyond. The students will write five reviews, and a 15-pages paper will be due at the end of the semester.
