One of the most popular anime in the last 5 years Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba has gained an extraordinarily large fan base since its animated release in 2019. The premise is easy to follow, the animation of fight scenes is revolutionary to the genre, and the variety of likable characters gives this anime the building blocks of success. Both the anime and manga, however, serve another purpose, the sharing of traditional Japanese folklore internationally through popular modern media. Each demon fought is adapted from an oni in Japanese folklore. In this course we will investigate: how are these oni depicted? How are their traditional tales adapted to entice a wider audience? What cinematic devices (character design, animation, screen position, symbolism) are used in order to further express the literary histories of these characters? Why are these oni being adapted for a modern-day retelling? Through comparing different works, we will develop a greater understanding of how the tools of animation are used to highlight environmentalist critique.
