Only recently have the behavior and experiences of men, as men, come to the foreground in the social sciences. It is through the work of critical feminist scholars that “man” stopped being an unmarked, normative category. This course examines the diverse experiences of boys and men and the public discourse surrounding masculinities through various theories of masculinities. From this, this course will look at several different important questions: What is masculinity? How has masculinity varied across space and time? How does the gendered social order influence men’s actions and the ways that men perceive their world? This course will take an intersectional perspective to explore gender through different dimensions of masculinity, including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, nationality, age, gender identity, and sexuality.
