From Fraiser to flatulence, what makes us laugh is a deeply personal and social matter. This course explores the construction and reception of comedy by asking “what’s funny” cross-culturally. Further, we explore how jokes function, who tells them, who laughs, and how society engages with different forms of comedy. In thinking about comedy, students will be able to investigate forms of resistance, solidarity, and cross-cultural communication through humor and effectively report on their effects.
