This course explores the domestication and cultural significance of cats, tracing their 15,000-year history with humans. Students will examine how cats transitioned from wild animals to companions, their roles in various societies, such as Ancient Egypt, and the diverse "jobs" they've held, from pest control to symbols. Through archaeological remains, art, literature, and artifacts, we'll uncover insights into human-cat relationships and their broader social, cultural, and economic contexts. Topics include evolution, domestication, human-animal bonds, and zooarchaeology, offering a holistic anthropological perspective on cats' enduring impact on human history and culture.
