The dual phenomena of poverty and discrimination will be examined in this course, largely through the framework of traditional economic models of human behavior. Various tools of economic analysis are developed and used to analyze the characteristics, root causes and resulting effects of poverty and discrimination, as well as the prescriptive treatments. Course material on poverty focuses on the treatment of inequality in terms of moral arbitrariness and systems of social justice. Course material on discrimination focuses on the roots of discrimination and evaluates the (non)potential of markets to alleviate such practices where irrational. Each topic will be started with module-based summaries and followed by readings, assignments and discussions. THIS COURSE IS APPROPRIATE FOR FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS. Format: Delivered in distance education format only. Students will be contacted by the instructor via Binghamton e-mail account just prior to the start of the session. A good computer and reliable internet access, as well as a Binghamton e-mail account are required. Course is taught using MyCourses with each day's reading and lecture assignment posted weekly. Items remain available for students to access at a time of day of their choosing. Online discussions will be weekly where students and the instructor talk about issues related to poverty and discrimination in a less formal manner.
