The course requires a basic understanding of economic principles as well as a good understanding of how to read and interpret statistics. This course covers the core topics in the field of development economics–study of the economics of developing countries. Topics include education, health, labor and migration, credit, savings and insurance, intra-household allocations, entrepreneurship, social networks, political economy, aid and corruption. For each topic, we seek to understand the factors and constraints influencing decision-making in developing countries. We will learn the cutting-edge empirical methods for applied microeconomic analysis, use the theory to analyze the behavior and outcomes, and then look at the policies that have been attempted and evaluated scientifically using the empirical tools..
