Take your class online with SUNY
You will learn the same curriculum as our on-campus students
In this course we will ask ourselves about the birth of the internet, what it gave rise to, how online spaces changed perceptions of self and other. We’ll examine early online communities and cultures that were born online. Looking at gender, race, ethnicity, world politics, and sexual orientation we’ll also look at gaming culture and online personas. We will then plunge into the dystopic literature that predicted the internet and cyborgism/Ai such as Neuromancer, Ghost in The Shell, James Tiptree Jr.’s The Girl Who Was Plugged In, alongside films like The Matrix, Hackers, Blade Runner, and Aeon Flux in order to consider the aesthetics of this genre. We will anchor our readings with theory like Donna Haraway’s Cyborg Manifesto to help our understanding of this literature and the time period’s crisis of distinction between what is human and what is an extension of, or modification of humanism through internet and technology.
