What do Hemingway’s literary description of bullfighting, Rocky, and the 2024 WNBA season all have in common? The message that the allure of sports persists in the popular consciousness of America.
Sports are often hailed for neutralizing the playing field. They are quite often referred to as the closest thing America has to a meritocracy. However, the history of sports in America remains an embattled site—sometimes played in a literal “arena”—on which we may see the tensions of race and gender relations play out. From the Magic-Bird feud that saved the NBA in the 1980s to the green-lighting of Creed in 2015, this class will explore representations of sports in popular culture and understand what sports, both in fiction and in the actual performance and lives of athletes, has to tell us about the broader realities of racial and gendered identities in America.
