This course aims to open a discussion on female superheroes and what they mean to a number of audiences around the world. Ms. Marvel, Mystique, Wonder Woman, and Harley Quinn will be the subject of discussion regarding representation of women on screen. It has been long argued that female leads are either femme fatale, where they display stock characteristics of a vamp and are generally considered as villains, or they are the walking exhibits of perfection. The discussions would range from understanding the concept of femineity in a power structure, role of female superheroes, and the ends to which these roles are used in cinema. The course will involve brief discussion posts about the views of students with regards to the characters in question and to contextualize them in the Marvel/DC universe. We will address the confrontations between feminism, film theory and psychoanalysis in the due course of discussions
