This course surveys the centuries-long histories of people we might today understand as trans and nonbinary in North America from the sixteenth century to the present day, and offers students an introduction to the intellectual methods by which historians and contemporary trans community members have used to understand our past. This class further encourages students to think critically about how the United States as a political and colonial entity has historically been shaped by systems of defining, surveilling, and policing normative forms of gender and sexuality. Drawing on readings from primary sources and the latest secondary research, this course challenges students not only to understand the experiences of individual trans people throughout history, but also to contend with the ways trans histories in North America should be understood alongside questions of queerness, racism, and colonialism.
