You will learn the same curriculum as our on-campus students
This course explores the history of children and childhood from the colonial period through the Civil War era, focusing on two questions: (1) how different and diverse the lived experiences of children and youth were, depending on race, class, gender, ethnicity, and geographical region, and (2) how the social discourse and ideology about childhood was shaped through times. Through primary source documents, lectures, articles, and other texts, we will examine different aspects of children’s lives in the past, including education, play, work, crime, and sexuality. We will also investigate what it meant to be a child in the past and how the history of children and childhood differs from that of adults.
