This course will examine the development of the first vaccine and the subsequent anti-vaccination movement during the nineteenth century in Victorian Britain. The smallpox vaccine is heralded as one of the greatest scientific discoveries, enabling humanity to eradicate the deadly disease. However, during the nineteenth century, there was a large and robust anti-vaccination movement. This course will cover the various motivations behind the movement and how the medical profession responded.
