This course explores the hidden yet influential role of smuggling in shaping global history. From ancient trade routes to modern-day black markets, smuggling has played a crucial role in the flow of goods, people, and ideas across borders. We will examine key case studies, predominantly from the early modern beyond, including the smuggling of contraband, gold, opium, weapons, as well as human trafficking. The course also delves into how smuggling has influenced global economies, geopolitics, and state power, often operating in the grey areas between legality and illegality. Through a combination of historical texts, case studies, and theoretical readings, students will gain a deeper understanding of the complex networks and actors that have shaped the global shadow economy throughout history.
