This course explores the intersection between human rights and global politics, using cinema as a lens to understand the historical and contemporary challenges in protecting and promoting human rights on a global scale. Beginning with the origins of modern human rights post-WWII, we trace their evolution as a key theme in international relations. We analyze the roles of international law and the United Nations in upholding these rights, as well as how Cold War policies highlighted tensions between strategic interests and human rights. The course also covers the evolving doctrine of humanitarian intervention and R2P in response to global crises, the War on Terror's impact on human rights, including new technologies like drones, and globalization's effects on human rights practices. Through critically acclaimed films, students will engage in analysis and debate, gaining insights into how global issues shape human rights issues at individual, state, and international levels.
