Is it better to be loved or to be feared? Does the end justify the means? What is more crucial for success: luck or skill? These are some of the questions that Machiavelli's treatise The Prince invites us to consider. While Machiavelli's writing style is direct, and he claims that his intention is to give us the truth about "the way things are," his text has nonetheless generated much controversy and many differing interpretations. In this course, we will read The Prince very closely and will explore in depth the critical traditions that have sprung up around this work that still speaks to us across the centuries. Final grade will be based on discussion posts, writing assignments, and peer-review of other students' writing. Students taking the course for credit toward an Italian major or minor will have additional assignments in Italian.
