History remembers the men who make a mark on the world, typically recording both their strengths and their weaknesses. Literature, however, transforms those men into legendary heroes whose devotion to honor, loyalty, and their kingdoms reframe them as the epitome of masculinity. This class examines how medieval literary interpretations of famous men cast these figures as national icons and how such iconography participates in expectation of masculinity for medieval cultures both locally and globally. Often these figures commit cannibalism, die gloriously in battle, and combat demonic forces--acts that exploit violence for personal gain framed as "national heroism." We will examine such literary figures as Richard the Lionheart, Charlemagne, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, and Rostam as we explore how history reimagines the past in order to ensure a future.
