The purpose of this course is to enable students to become proficient in the use of information systems/technology resources to implement quality improvement initiatives and support practice decision-making. This course draws on the body of knowledge from cognitive, computer, and information sciences. A systems approach will be used to examine the benefits and constraints of current infrastructure, including both hardware and software, for administrative and clinical decisions making. Using an evidencebased practice approach, the student will analyze a clinical practice information system and develop a quality improvement plan that addresses a deficiency systems in or expands the capacity of the current system to evaluate or monitor patient outcomes. Students will also explore a broad range of healthcare technology applications including systems for consumer health education. In addition, students will demonstrate knowledge of standards and principles for selecting and evaluating information systems and patient care technology, and related ethical, regulatory, and legal issues.
