This course introduces students to the principles of formal logic, as well as informal logical reasoning found in opinion pieces or ordinary conversations. The overarching goal of this course is to help students think more clearly and critically, regardless of their area of study. To achieve this goal, we will focus on learning the fundamentals of arguments, common mistakes in reasoning (logical fallacies), how to analyze deductive and inductive arguments, and how we can strengthen or weaken arguments. We will also apply these logical tools to some of the contemporary ethical questions, such as the morality of factory farming and abortion.
