In common discourse, we speak of how one ought to behave, especially in terms of how one should treat others and themselves. This introductory course surveys the major philosophical schools of ethical thought, including utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue theory, as well as some new contenders, such as sentimentalism. The material then pivots from the theoretical to the applied, as we consider how ethical theories might grapple with controversial modern issues and what resolutions might be found or whether any satisfactory resolution is available.
