This is an introductory philosophy course, aimed to orient students at the principles of basic moral reasoning to be applied in healthcare settings. Students will become familiar with the primary moral frameworks of utilitarianism and deontology, as well as other moral theories such as care ethics and virtue ethics, which will then be used in the context of moral dilemmas relating to medical care. Some topics to be discussed include abortion, euthanasia, scarce resource allocation (ex. Early vaccines in pandemics,) animal use in biomedical research, issues dealing with psychiatry such as involuntary psychiatric commitment, and genetic manipulation and enhancement. Students will use the philosophical “toolkit” developed in order to address the bioethical issues proposed, recognizing the issues themselves that arise in medical situations and defending one’s own position in regard to such ethical challenges.
