Werner Herzog once said “If we speak of television it's just... ridiculous and destructive. It kills us. And talk-shows will kill us. They kill our language. . . ”
Herzog’s language is hyperbolic and precedes the existence of contemporary internet technology and generative AI, but some might still find it apt for describing moral life and political society in the present. This class aims to introduce students to basic philosophical concepts in the philosophy of technology and ethics. Students will be asked to think critically about what technology is and how it might help and harm thinking and moral agency. We will read philosophical texts and discuss some science fiction movies. Topics will include generative AI, the use of algorithms in public policy, and the effects of capitalism on labor.
