This course explores the concept of biopolitics, a framework that examines how political power governs human life, bodies, and the regulation of their functions in the modern era. Drawing on the works of theorists such as Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben, and Judith Butler, among others, students will engage with an understanding of the techniques through which state institutions, medical systems, and technologies that shape and determine the course of the lives of certain individuals depending on their identity or status in society. Key themes that will be focused on in this course include: the management of populations through surveillance and data collection; the impact of biopolitics on marginalized communities, particularly in relation to ethnicity, class, gender, and citizenship and; the ethical impact of biotechnological advances. Through readings and discussions, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of biopolitical theory and its practical implications for contemporary governance, social justice, and personal autonomy. By the end of the course, students will be equipped to critically engage with the complex relationships between politics, power, and life in the twenty-first century.
