This course will examine elite and public opinion changes that often occur from major historical events. Within the American context, the Vietnam War, Cold War, and War on Terror shaped both the public opinion and cultural landscape that still continues today. Throughout this course, students will listen firsthand to the songs of conflict and watch segments of films that were created in response to war. Though not an exhaustive list, highlights of this course include ‘Gimme Shelter’ by The Rolling Stones, the ‘Miracle on Ice’, ‘Where is the Love?’ by the Black Eyed Peas, and Rocky IV. By looking at the policy actions during high intensity conflict times in conjunction with examples of public opinion changes, students will gain a better understanding of how conflict shapes the public in ways beyond the ballot box.
