PLSC 389S The Rise of Populism - From the United States to Latin America and Europe, populism is on the rise everywhere. Once of negligible importance, today populists can mobilize millions of voters and acquire immense political power enough to influence democratic life. This course intends to introduce students to what populism is and is not, why it is on the rise, and its relationship with democratic systems of government. The course will link the theoretical debate about populism and democracy to real life examples and devote considerable time on populists all around the world. This course satisfies the Comparative Politics and upper-level requirement for the Political Science major.
