The field of behavioral epigenetics offers an interesting perspective on the interplay between genetics and the environment, showing how experiences and surroundings can influence DNA expression. This emerging area of study sheds light on how both inherited factors and life experiences shape behavior, mental health, and potentially even impact future generations. Through this course, students will gain a deeper understanding of how "nature" and "nurture" interact on a molecular level to contribute to individual differences. This course will provide an in-depth overview of epigenetics, focusing on neurodevelopment, animal and human behaviors, and neuropsychiatric disorders. We will explore how epigenetics is a mechanistic link between early life experiences and enduring neurobiological and behavioral effects. Additionally, we will examine the role of epigenetic changes in the development of psychopathology throughout the lifespan and discuss how insights from behavioral epigenetics might inform new pharmacotherapeutic strategies and preventive approaches in psychiatry.
