The nuclear family is often considered to be the basic unit of social organization, but
in reality is a very recent and limited phenomenon. This course will look at the historical
development of the nuclear family, and will examine other types of families that exist around the
world. We will ask, and hopefully answer, the questions: why is the nuclear family so often
considered the default? What kinship dynamics define family life, whether between partners, or
between parent and child? What other forms of kinship are possible?
