This course seeks to take an historical approach to the question of “forever wars.” It’s designed to introduce students to the sociological study of warfare. No matter where or when we choose to mark the beginning of “Modernity,” we can recognize that the modern period has been punctuated by frequent and recurrent warfare- contemporary conflicts serving as relatively recent examples of a pattern that has been playing out for hundreds of years. This course argues that warfare and violence’s role in the making of the world we live in today is an important subject of study, treating it as such.
