This course explores the Black Atlantic through the words and experiences of diaspora members whose voices are too often under-documented by Western scholars. The course will therefore focus on primary texts such as diaries, essay collections, satires, autobiographies, first person accounts, novelistic retelling of true events to seek the voice of people of African-origin. Major course themes include the ‘slave ship’, Haitian Revolution, Afro-Pessimism, gender relations and Apartheid.
