In 2019, the #MeToo Movement spread internationally, bolstering or transforming local feminist movements around the world, thanks to social media and translation. Platforms like X or TikTok help to spread feminist movements, reinforce intersectional approaches to feminism, and create communities for women. Translation makes this possible. In this course, students will explore the intersection of feminism, activism, and translation studies through readings, film, literature, social media, and project presentations. Questions to be explored include: What are the benefits and limitations of hashtag activism? What other feminist movements have successfully spread internationally? Why do some movements spread and others don't? How can translation be seen as a feminist activity? No translation experience, second language knowledge, or any other prerequisites are necessary for this course.
