This course introduces students to the exciting world of video game localization by looking at the remarkable work of translators in some popular video game series like Super Mario, Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty and so much more. In doing so, it addresses questions such as: When did game localization really take off? What does this cultural, regional, and linguistic adaptation entail? What strategies do localizers employ to create an enjoyable player experience? What technical considerations go into transcreating source material? By engaging with scholarly resources and audiovisual entertainment, students will gain insight and appreciation for the hard task of localization, especially as it pertains to issues of censorship, challenges, linguistic nuances, cultural intricacies, and translation styles.
