You will learn the same curriculum as our on-campus students
In this course, we will explore advocacy writing across a variety of platforms, and develop messaging for print or digital media distribution. We will consider local and global organizations and movements supporting human, animal, and environmental causes and non-profits—with students ultimately selecting an organization or movement of individual interest, and developing a portfolio of written and oral pieces for relevant audiences. One of the main objectives is engaging the writing process to develop assignments through discussion, drafting and revision. To that end, the portfolio will include an argumentative research paper, from which students develop targeted advocacy letters, opinion column/blog/social media posts (with visuals), and a short video promotion (e.g., TikTok reel) to amplify messaging. Students are welcome and encouraged (but not required) to choose an organization or cause with which they hope to intern or work toward in a future non-profit career.
