This course provides an analytical overview of the field of Ethnomusicology. It not only explores the intellectual history of ethnomusicology but also investigates the contemporary debates and discussions of the discipline. It highlights many of the important scholarly works which have marked the prominent issues and topics in the discipline while probing the ways ethnomusicologists interpret the interrelationships of music, mankind, culture, and nature. The course introduces a wide range of musical practices, and ways of thinking about music as culture, as human behavior, and as soundscape in different parts of the world. To this end, the course owes much of its theoretical orientation to disciplines that lie outside of the field of music proper, such as anthropology, gender studies, cultural studies, and philosophy.
