This is a foundation course that explores the role and responsibilities of the nurse in meeting the demands of current and evolving health care systems. The history and theoretical basis of the profession are introduced. Standards of practice, ethical issues, and personal values are examined. Political, social,
and economic issues, as they relate to nursing and health care, are also considered. Cultural awareness and sensitivity are emphasized. Consideration of the school's mission and philosophy is followed by student development of a personal philosophy of nursing practice.
