Selected topics courses are regularly scheduled courses that focus on a particular topic of interest. Descriptions are printed in the Schedule of Classes each semester. By analyzing literature as a reflection of societal, cultural, and educational differences, the course reveals the dominant culture's attempts to preserve the status quo, erase historical narratives, and marginalize minority populations. Through examining efforts to suppress minority identities, students will gain insight into the intersections of public education, legal frameworks, and knowledge control, assessing patterns of resistance and reaction that prompt book banning, censorship, and governmental oversight of school curricula.
