Course description - EDS 393 - Intellectual Freedom: Banned Books, Censorship, and the American School Description: This course delves into the dynamics of cultural diversity in the United States, focusing on book banning and censorship as mechanisms for suppressing diverse perspectives, particularly those of Black people, women, ethnic minorities, and LGBTQ individuals. By analyzing literature as a reflection of societal, cultural, and educational differences, the course reveals the dominant culture's attempts to preserve the status quo, erase historical narratives, and marginalize minority populations. Through examining efforts to suppress minority identities, students will gain insight into the intersections of public education, legal frameworks, and knowledge control, assessing patterns of resistance and reaction that prompt book banning, censorship, and governmental oversight of school curricula.
