This course offers an introduction to the historical, socio-cultural, and philosophical dimensions of Buddhism. It begins with the founding of the religion in India by Guatama Buddha and proceeds to trace its many philosophical trajectories and its multi-cultural history extending throughout Southern and Eastern Asia and beyond. The second half of the semester focuses on the Mahayana Buddhist tradition as a case study in the ''attaining of enlightenment'' by ordinary individuals, analyzing how this tradition had been shaped by historical and cultural forces as well as how it may apply to contemporary issues in our increasingly globalized world.
