This course will examine the causes and trends leading to the Holocaust, the period between 1933 and 1945 during which European Jewry and its culture were destroyed by Nazi Germany and its allies. Events of the Holocaust period will be examined, from the rise of Hitler to power, through the adoption of the Nuremberg laws and the implementation of the Final Solution. Topics studied include: ghetto life and concentration of world Jewry and the non-Jewish world, and the aftermath for the survivors and their children. The pre- and post-Holocaust relationship between world Jewry and western civilization will be explored.
