This course focuses on teaching reading, writing, speaking, listening, and visual and media literacy skills through conscious awareness and use of multiple, integrated, practical, and creative problem-solving strategies adapted to the specific needs and interests of all students including emergent bilingual/multilingual students (English Language Learners). Topics will include language development & acquisition, multilingualism, as well as literature and classroom activities that reflects diversity and issues of social justice in the classroom. This course will help candidates affirm, respect, and value cultural, linguistic, and ethnic diversity through the development of multicultural competencies and their role in teaching literacy.
Prerequisites: EDR522 OR EDR 524; and EDU5140 OR EDU5150.
