Take your class online with SUNY
You will learn the same curriculum as our on-campus students
This course explores personal works by film and video artists working outside the commercial studio system, from the early avant-garde to contemporary moving image art. Through selected films and artistic movements such as Surrealism, Expressionism, and Minimalism, we’ll examine how filmmakers challenge conventions of form, narrative, and perception. The course invites students to expand how they see, hear, and respond to cinema, creatively, critically, and personally. Students will engage in both writing and video-making assignments using mobile phones or cameras. The aim is to develop a deeper understanding of the medium through hands-on practice and reflection. No equipment? No problem. Alternative assignments are available. Let’s explore new ways of understanding cinema. Come experiment.
