Vampires widely symbolize consumption, cannibalism, and insatiable violence, most famously rooted in Eastern European folklore. Yet, vampire-like creatures appear nearly in nearly every culture's mythology. In Latin America and the Caribbean, vampires and other creatures such as the Soucouyant and El Chupacabra circulate through legend and oral tradition, serving not only as figures of horror but also as expressions of communal anxieties. This course explores how these regional criaturas vampíricas have been adapted into film: How do cinematic vampires echo the oral stories that shaped them? What symbolic meanings emerge from their representation, and to what ends? How do filmmakers reimagine these figures to critique history, politics, and society? This course will consist of a brief introduction to the figure of the Vampire in Latin American and Caribbean film, we will analyze works across genres and contexts. Topics include political corruption in the satirical animated film ¡Vampiros en La Habana! (Cuba, 1985), the lingering trauma of dictatorship in the horror-comedy El Conde (Chile, 2023), and the relentless passage of time in Guillermo del Toro's Cronos (Mexico, 1992). We will also examine the cult classic Alucarda (Mexico, 1977), which critiques colonialism and Catholicism through its supernatural lens. All readings, screenings, and assignments will be in English.
