An exploration of ethnic, urban and material history with a focus on Yiddish speaking, Eastern European immigrant society and its encounter with America’s signature metropolis at the turn of the 20th century. An eclectic mix of film and literature, urban architecture and everyday artefacts provide our tools for class, as we investigate the complex interplay between place and population. We encounter themes that have a particular as well as universal resonance, such as the collective imagining of home for those who are newly displaced, and an embrace of fresh identities by the newly arrived. This effort to describe how an immigrant society responds to the experience of displacement – demographic and cultural, social and economic – provides us with the constant challenge of class.
