This course surveys the history of the premodern world in terms of changes, connections, and comparisons among the world’s cultures and peoples. Moving throughout the regions, across continents, and in seas and oceans, we consider the ways in which ideas (about spirituality, government, and difference.), objects (of trade, technology, and devotion), and people (migrants and exiles, soldiers and slaves, missionaries and merchants) developed and moved, transforming populations and places alike. We look at the emergence of states, of religions, of commercial networks, and systems of exploitation and cooperation. Together, these offer us the means to comprehend the nature of increasing premodern interconnectivity, even in a period when a great deal of historical change unfolded within local or regional contexts. Assessments will consist of three, one-on-one oral exams, conducted synchronously via Zoom. Exams will be offered in 20-minute increments over a six-hour period (9am till 3pm, EST) on 23 December 2025, 9 January 2026, and 16 January 2026. For these exams, students must have access to and use a webcam with a fully functional camera and microphone.
