This is an introductory course that explores new and emerging musical genres in Africa. It also examines significant influence of western cultures on Africa popular Culture. The course will examine the root and the developments of old musical style from which the new sounds emerged as well as the contribution of selected musicians/composers. This course will further discuss unique characteristics of African music such as rhythm, instruments, vocal techniques and many others that is vital to African music performance. The course will discuss African popular music as a voice of the younger generation to speak directly to political authorities and other issues relating to identity.
